01/03/10 MP slams the Tory budget

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper was pleased that Conservative controlled council heeded her call for a Council tax freeze this week but was very disappointed that with £23million in the bank they failed to invest in initiatives such as weekly waste collection, concessionary travel and youth provision.

Rosie commented: "With £23 Million sat in their bank account, it is a disgrace that the Tory Council continue to refuse to give pensioners concessionary travel arrangements comparable to neighbouring areas, to re-instate weekly bin collections, and refuse to invest in services for young people, including free swimming.

"They could have done all this and more but instead have chosen to retain an obscene amount of cash in reserves."

Rosie continued: "If they weren’t going to invest in services for local people or save jobs, rather than keep the money in the bank they should have returned it to the rightful owners their council taxpayers with a reduction in Council Tax."
