The two headteachers were nominated by West Lancashire MP, Rosie Cooper, for their hard work and dedication to their schools.

Rosie Cooper MP said: “I am delighted to recognise Alison and Hilary for their hard work and dedication to their pupils in their schools. They are a brilliant example of the headteachers we have in West Lancashire. It was my privilege to have the opportunity to take them to Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister, his wife and Schools Secretary, Ed Balls.”

Hilary Torpey, Headteacher of Glenburn Sports College said: “This is a once in a lifetime occasion to represent our different schools. We both feel incredibly privileged to have been given this opportunity by Rosie to join her at 10 Downing Street. At the reception, we were thrilled to meet the Prime Minister, his wife Sarah, Schools Secretary, Ed Balls and other cabinet members.

"We were proud to speak about our achievements in our own schools and within our West Lancashire partnerships, recognising the hard work and commitment of our students, staff and Governors with the continued support of our families.”

Alison Albion, Headteacher of Westhead Lathom St James CE Primary School said: "I was honoured and thrilled to be asked. Meeting the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown and Ed Balls was extremely uplifting as they were keen to acknowledge the hard-work and goodwill from all staff, at all levels in schools that make a positive difference to children.

"Thank you to Rosie who had given us so much of her time! It had been a chance of a life-time and we appreciate it. It didn't seem real but we have photos, a pen and of course a fridge magnet from the shop to prove it!"
