West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper is encouraging local parents and carers to take up their right to flexible working. Rosie applauds the Labour Government for extending flexible working rights to cover more people with caring responsibilities. From April 2007 the right to request flexible working was extended to cover carers of adults. Originally the law was introduced to give parents with young children the right to flexible working.
“The flexible working law is designed to meet the needs of parents, carers and employers. As I carer I know the demands this placed on an individual, especially when trying to balance a job with caring responsibilities. I am delighted that the Labour Government has extended the existing laws to include carers of adults. It is important that all parents and carers in West Lancashire are aware of their rights to flexible working."
“Parents and carers now have genuine choices about how they balance work and family caring responsibilities. The law aims to facilitate discussion between employers and employees to find a working solution that suits everyone.”
The Government has committed to keep this law under review and examine the case for extending the law to the parents of older children.
