MP Rosie Cooper has slammed Conservative-run West Lancashire Borough Council for failing local residents after the Council’s Planning Department has admitted they don’t have enough staff to deal with enforcement.
Spending cuts and long term sickness have left the department with just one enforcement officer who is unable to deal with the present case load. In a letter to MP Rosie, the Borough Planner admitted that complaints were taking “longer to fully investigate and resolve”.
Rosie has been contacted by a number of West Lancashire residents who have been in touch with the Council to report planning breaches only to be told that the Council can’t deal with them at present.
Commenting on the issue, MP Rosie said:
“This is yet another example of West Lancashire Borough Council failing to deliver adequate service to local residents. Council staff members continue to work hard and deal with issues as best they can but they are being failed by their bosses.
“What is the point in West Lancashire Borough Council setting planning conditions if it doesn’t have the capability to enforce them? How many more planning breaches will developers be able to get away with just because the Borough Council has run down yet another one of their services?
“The Planning Department is one of the only services run by the Borough Council that generates income. Failure to maintain this service will result in lost revenue for the Borough Council and send out the message that West Lancashire is closed for business and that it will be easier to break planning regulations and get away with it.”
