"SERVICES ARE NOT YET WON”
Labour MP for West Lancashire, Rosie Cooper, says the “battle for the future of our health services in West Lancashire is not yet won.”
Rosie Cooper has been fighting a Say No To Hospital Merger Campaign in West Lancashire following the news Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trusts could be merged with Aintree and Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen Hospital Trusts.
Last weekend Rosie Cooper MP and supportive campaigners from the Labour Party, Unison and community activists were out getting petitions signed in Ormskirk Market and in Burscough. On the day thousands of people signed Rosie Cooper’s Say No To Merger petiton.
Rosie Cooper MP said:
“We received a fantastic response from people in both Ormskirk and Burscough over the weekend. We had people queuing to add their names to the petition. Clearly people feel very strongly about the proposal to merge our hospitals with those in Liverpool."
“I am a little concerned, however, that some people believe the merger option is off the table. Over the weekend people said they had seen the news and thought the merger had been called off by the Health Secretary, Patricia Hewitt.“
“In fact what she said was that any merger proposal would be subject to local consultation and ministerial approval. This is a long way away from saying we will not get a merger in West Lancashire. I would not want local people to be misinformed."
“We must keep fighting against any merger until we have a definite and absolute answer. Unless people express their opposition to this hospital merger the Government will not know the depth of feeling there is locally. I saw it for myself this weekend. If the voice of West Lancashire is loud enough then the Government will br under no illusion as to the wishes of local people.”
“We need to keep up the fight to stop any merger from going ahead. By signing the Say No To Merger petition people can make their voices heard, ensuring the Strategic Health Authority and the Government know that local people are totally opposed to this talk of merger.”
“We have collected thousands of names so far but anyone yet to sign a petition needs to make their voice heard quickly. Please call into my constituency office at 127 Burscough Street or phone 01695 570094"
