Constituents and Labour Members were so unhappy on hearing rumours that Mrs Thatcher was being considered for a State Funeral that they wrote to Rosie Cooper MP. She then wrote to the Prime Minister seeking an assurance that this wasn’t the case. Number 10 has now responded that there are no such plans.
“Although Mrs Thatcher was a long standing Prime Minister, State Funerals are reserved for exceptional Prime Ministers such as Winston Churchill who led a Coalition Government and won the Second World War."
"The negative impact of Mrs Thatcher’s Government were felt particularly hard here in the North West which is why I am not surprised that people have shown concern at this suggestion.”
