07/09/10 MP Rosie questions Home Secretary on phone tapping alle

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper challenged the Home Secretary on who monitors the relationship between journalists and the police following comments from Assistant Commissioner Yates yesterday.
Rosie asked the question during a debate in the House of Commons after an urgent question on phone tapping was tabled in light of the allegations over the weekend.
Rosie Cooper said:
“I understand one MP whose name appeared on these lists had his mobile phone company confirm that his phone had been compromised.  However, the police have not investigated this matter any further.  As Assistant Commissioner Yates acknowledged yesterday there are relationships between the police and journalists. Therefore, we need to be assured that any investigations (or lack of) are not inhibited by those relationships. Perhaps it is now time for the Independent Police Complaints Commission to look at this and assure people affected by the alleged phone tapping that their privacy and interests are being protected by the police."
“There are former journalists serving prison sentences for this illegal activity.  We cannot underestimate the seriousness of these alleged activities and every incident should be investigated fully.”
