“I am appalled that the Government intends to rush through a vote to increase the current tuition fee cap on Thursday, potentially making fees in this country the highest of any public university system in the industrialised world. The Government’s plans are not necessary, not fair and not good for higher education.
“Prior to this year’s General Election, I signed the National Union of Students’ pledge to oppose a fee rise in this Parliament and I will honour this promise. I firmly believe the cost of universities should be shared fairly between the taxpayer and graduates and I am disappointed that the Government is trying to end this principle, instead introducing a market-led approach to higher education with the end result being that many students could be forced to choose the cheapest course available rather than one that suits them best.”
“I am completely opposed to plans which will see tuition fees trebled and I will be standing up for students on Thursday and voting against the ConDem Government’s proposals which seriously threaten the future our world class university system.”
