Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

10/01/11 - Taxi Companies take passengers for a ride with price

Local residents have complained to Rosie Cooper MP after some local taxi companies doubled their prices during the recent snowfall leaving customers feeling exploited.

The West Lancashire MP has called on trading standards and the local licensing authority, West Lancashire Borough Council, to investigate these practices.

Residents contacted the local MP to make her aware that some companies were doubling the normal fares for customers and other companies charged £5 for the first mile of a journey.

MP Rosie said:
“Local residents quite rightly feel as if they have been ‘taken for a ride’ in more ways than one as some local taxi companies hiked up their prices as the snow fell across West Lancashire.  It is not surprising that people feel exploited.

“I have called on trading standards and the local licensing authority to investigate these practises because people need to know where they stand legally.  We shouldn’t have a situation in which individual licensed companies make such arbitrary and indiscriminate price rises.

“Many people were reliant on the taxi companies to get to the shops, medical appointments and to work.  For some people working shifts the cost of the taxi to and from work ended up being the same as a day’s pay.  They were clear that it wasn't worth going into work in these circumstances and that there should be more licensed Black Cabs who adhere to prices set by the licensing authority.

Well done to the taxi companies who didn't hike up their prices, but from the action of those that did - we need to have some clear rules and practices in these situations, and failing that residents want Black Cabs and regulation.”
