A cash injection to give real help to West Lancashire council tenants has been warmly welcomed by local MP Rosie Cooper.
Housing Minister Margaret Beckett announced Government will halve the national guideline increase from 6.2% to 3.1%. It is for local authorities to apply for the subsidy to reduce the council rent increases this year.
“This announcement to reduce the council rent increase is a substantial offer of help for council tenants from the Government. In the current circumstances Government is taking the necessary action to ensure tenants get a fair and affordable deal.”
“I will be writing to West Lancashire District Council to make sure they are taking advantage of this additional money and reduce the scheduled increase making a real difference to our council tenants. Tenants can’t afford for the council to refuse this help like they did with free swimming for the under 16’s.”
“A rent reduction is a reduction, I am sure council tenants will be delighted to have more money in their pockets. My job is to get it delivered to their pockets as quickly as possible."
“I have taken these issues up with the Secretary of State to ensure a reduction can be implemented at the earliest opportunity so residents can get the maximum benefit from the reduction."
“There is only West Lancashire District Council that could whinge about a rent reduction for their tenants.”
