Reacting to the Government’s plans for privatisation of Royal Mail, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:
“My position on Royal Mail has consistently been that I am a firm supporter of a modern, publicly-owned, universal postal system. I believe there needs to be modernisation but not privatisation.
“Through a modernisation programme Royal Mail’s profits have doubled under public ownership. Therefore, you have to question the Government’s decision and their timing. It seems to me it’s more about selling off the family silver to cover the cost of the extra Government borrowing. The Government has certainly not made a case why it is in taxpayer’s interests to be selling Royal Mail at this time.
“I think all taxpayers will end up with is a poorer service and one that costs more. That doesn’t sound like a good deal to me.”
