Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

11/11/10 MP Rosie Cooper comments on report criticising council'

In response to the Audit Commission’s damning report of West Lancashire Borough Council’s housing services, Labour MP for West Lancashire, Rosie Cooper said:
“The failings pointed out in the report will feel very familiar to tenants of West Lancashire Borough Council.  I understand the Audit Commission said that the council ‘does not focus its services on what local people really need’.  This says it all as far as I am concerned and it is certainly true based on the evidence of the letters, emails and telephone calls I receive from constituents.
“It is ironic that the Borough Council invited the Audit Commission to review their initial assessment and after a second visit the Audit Commission still came to the same damning conclusion.
“I would expect the Council to stop whingeing about the report and get on with fixing the problem.  My fear though is the situation will only get worse and the Council will continue to fail its tenants.  Only the Council will be hiding behind the excuse of budget cuts, delivered by the hand of their own Conservative-Liberal Democrat Government.”
“It seems that whenever the Conservative-controlled Council is failing they are unwilling to accept any criticism.  They are quick enough to accept the plaudits when they are seen to be doing well.  They need to accept there is a problem and focus on solving the problem not attacking the messenger.”
