West Lancashire MP, Rosie Cooper, is warning motorists to be on their guard against fraudsters trying to clone credit cards at petrol stations. In recent months there have been a spate of incidents across the UK in which motorists paying for petrol have had their debit and credit cards cloned. The criminals then take the details and take money from people’s accounts.
“I want motorists to be aware that card cloning is a growing problem and they must take the necessary precautions to ensure their details remain secure."
“I have contacted Lancashire Police about this problem and they assure me that there have been no recorded incidents of card cloning in West Lancashire. This is not to say it won’t happen and people need to be aware when using their debit and credit cards.”
“The chip and pin technology has increased security but this hasn’t stopped criminals using cloned details in other countries who do not yet have this system. I would suggest to anyone who believes their debit or credit card has been cloned to contact the police immediately.”
