WEST Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has welcomed the decision by the Department for Communities and Local Government to ‘call in’ the proposed new Everton/Tesco development at Kirkby.
Rosie had written to the Secretary of State earlier in the year outlining her concerns about the scheme and how it would impact on West Lancashire.
Rosie said: “I think the decision to ‘call in’ the scheme is a wise one.
“It is important that the plan is scrutinised very carefully to ensure it doesn’t have a detrimental impact on West Lancashire, especially the new £350m town centre for Skelmersdale.
“I’ve always said that I am all for regenerating areas such as Kirkby but a balance needs to be struck. The concern is that the Kirkby scheme would have a detrimental effect and drag trade away from West Lancashire.
“We’ve waited far too long for Skelmersdale to get the town centre it deserves for it to be damaged by a huge project just a few miles away down the M58.
“I know that other areas have expressed concerns about the Kirkby scheme and believe they will also welcome the news that it will be ‘called in’.”
