Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

16/09/13 - Shadow Defence Minister Visits West Lancashire Manufa

Alison Seabeck MP, Shadow Defence Minister, visited West Lancashire companies with local MP Rosie Cooper as part of her tour of Britain.

Ms Seabeck’s visit helped to highlight the innovative and creative work companies, such as Scott Safety, are doing in making equipment for the military and defence industries.  It was also an opportunity for the companies to discuss their experiences as manufacturers seeking to supply these important yet competitive markets.

Scott Safety in Skelmersdale was one of the stops for Rosie and Alison as part of the Shadow Minister's tour.

Alison Seabeck MP said:

“It was a real pleasure to have the opportunity to visit West Lancashire businesses with Rosie, and to see firsthand the work they are doing in building equipment used by our armed forces.

“In my role as shadow defence minister, I feel it is very important for me to meet on site with the businesses that contribute so much to Britain’s military and defence work.

“I have enjoyed seeing the high quality and innovative products that supply these industries.  It is up to me to understand the companies’ experience in trying to access and thrive in the defence sector, as it is notoriously difficult.

“There are certainly lessons to be learnt from visits like this.  We need to make sure we are doing all we can to support British manufacturers and suppliers rather than scaring them off.”

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:

“I am delighted that Alison was able to come to West Lancashire as part of her tour of Britain.

“A modern army performs a wide array of tasks and requires an equally wide range of equipment.  Here in West Lancashire we have companies like Scott Safety who are at the forefront of manufacturing equipment to meet those wide-ranging needs.

“This was an opportunity for those involved in the defence and military industry to offer their insights, share the experiences and provide their informed opinions to the Shadow Defence Minister.  I know that Alison will take a lot away from this visit."
