West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:
"It saddens me to say but the youth unemployment figures whilst shocking are not a surprise given the failing economic policies of this Conservative-led Government.
"It seems that the Conservative's have not learnt the lessons of the 1980s. During the 1980s there were areas of West Lancashire with real unemployment rates at 50%. We cannot afford for this to happen again. If the Government continues on its current path we will be faced with another generation of young people thrown onto the scrapheap. A generation for whom benefits not work will be all they know.
"There is a certain irony that as the new West Lancashire College opens its doors it offers hope and opportunities for our young people. They also need to have opportunities in their working lives. This Conservative-led government needs to take action now by investing in jobs and growth before too many young in West Lancashire and across the country are thrown onto the scrapheap by their current policies."
