West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper joined members of the Phoenix Sub-Aqua club at Nye Bevan swimming pool on Friday 7 March 2014 as members gave their new equipment an under-water test dive.
MP Rosie was invited along by Club Chairman Brian Dix, Dive Officer Peter Eaton, and club members, Beverly Eaton, Joan Dix and John Kinnear. Rosie supported the club in its successful application to Sport England for nearly £10,000. The funding has been used to purchase 10 new full scuba kits and 2 emergency O2 kits, which will be available for new trainees to use free of charge.
MP Rosie said:
"Congratulations to the Phoenix diving club on securing this funding from Sport England. I was delighted to be able to give them my support with their application. People like Brian and Peter have put in a lot of hard work to build the club and the new diving equipment will be a real boost for the club. Using Nye Bevan for their training and providing all the necessary equipment makes scuba diving accessible for anyone wanting to have a go.
"I would certainly encourage anyone who has always fancied learning to dive to consider going along to one of the Phoenix club's Wednesday sessions. You don't have to travel abroad to learn to scuba dive you can do it right here on your own doorstep."
Phoenix Club Chairman, Brian Dix said:
"It was fantastic to be able to show Rosie what a massive difference this funding will make for our scuba club in providing new equipment. Diving can be seen as an expensive activity. However, our aim at the Phoenix Club is to provide the necessary equipment for people to get involved in diving. It's not just the diving that is enjoyable, by joining the club you get to meet new people and we have a great laugh. As people become more involved then there are also trips to enjoy as well. We would be delighted to welcome any new divers.
"We offer a 'try dive' session for beginners who might just want a taster session and to try breathing under water in the safe surroundings of the local swimming pool.
“The Nye Bevan management and staff have always been very supportive of our club and its aims and we are grateful for their help."
Phoenix members meet every Wednesday between 8pm and 10pm at Nye Bevan swimming pool in Skelmersdale for their training. Along with full membership the club offers try dive sessions for people considering taking up scuba diving. For £20 first time divers get 30 minute theory lesson covering the basics in diving. This is followed by one hour in the pool where you can experience breathing under water. Throughout the year the club has various diving trips in the UK, such as Lake Windermere and Anglesey, or the warmer waters of Egypt and Malta.
