West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has called on Wigan Athletic Football Club to publicly confirm or deny whether they are putting on hold plans to develop their Youth Academy.

On Friday 14 June, BBC sports reporter and presenter, Richard Askam, tweeted “Dave Whelan says everything to be thrown at promotion push.  Academy development on hold for now.”

Wigan Athletic Football Club was contacted by the MP’s Office asking them to confirm if the academy plans had stalled.  The club responded saying they were not making a public statement on this matter.

In mid-May following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, MP Rosie wrote to Wigan Athletic’s Chief Executive, Jonathan Jackson, asking the club to confirm if it intended to pursue its plans to develop a training academy in Wrightington.  The club have yet to reply to Rosie Cooper’s correspondence.

Speaking following this most recent development, MP Rosie said:

“It is simply outrageous that Wigan Athletic continue to remain silent about their training academy plans despite the Chairman’s reported comments they’re on hold.

“I believe Wrightington residents deserve to be given an answer one way or another over the clubs intentions.  They have to live with the continued speculation and uncertainty about what will happen to their community.

“Given the comments from a respected BBC journalist the club should once and for all put an end to this speculation by making a formal statement about their plans.”
