Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

17/07/07 Comment on Alternate Weekly Collections

Rosie Cooper MP said:

“West Lancashire has tried fortnightly collections and residents believe it is just not enough. I have received a huge number of complaints from local residents about the system. People tell me about the smells from the rotting waste and the vermin it attracts. When I have been out in different areas of the constituency I have seen for myself the problems of fly-tipping, which is a real eyesore and a potential health hazard.”

“It is right that we must find ways to increase recycling rates, but this should not be at the expense residents’ health and safety. West Lancashire District Council should revert to the weekly collection of food and non recyclable waste. Other areas can manage weekly collections so why NOT West Lancashire? The health and well-being of local residents should matter more than the Council’s wish to save money by using fortnightly collections. If they want to save money they can use the money set aside for crackpot schemes, such as the new civic offices costing £7 million.”
