Rosie Cooper and local pensioners continue their fight for free rail travel this week by taking their 2500 name petition to West Lancashire District Council chiefs.

MP Rosie was joined by Jim Burgess and Ray Brookfield of the West Lancashire Pensioners Forum as they discussed with Les Abernethy, Deputy Chief Executive the strength of local feeling on this issue. Over 2500 residents signed the petition to demand free rail travel for West Lancashire pensioners with Deputy Chief Executive, Les Abernethy.

At the end of January local pensioners joined the MP in taking to the streets with this campaign with stalls in Ormskirk and Skelmersdale where pensioners could add their names to the petition. Local pensioners have been out getting people to sign this petition.

Rosie Cooper MP said:

“There is strong support for this campaign to get our local pensioners a fair deal on free travel, at least the option of free rail pass. They deserve a fair deal on free public transport like their neighbours in Wigan, Southport and Merseyside. The Tory-controlled council needs to do the right thing with its profit on concessionary travel funding given to it by the government.”

Jim Burgess, chair of West Lancashire Pensioners Forum, said:

“If the Conservative council continue to refuse to give us a fair deal on free public transport it just shows they are not listening to the local pensioners. It is clear they are not interested in getting the best transport deal possible for us."

“All we want as local pensioners is fair deal. It is frustrating having to even fight for this concession as they have the money to fund the scheme.”

Rosie will take the fight on behalf of local pensioners to the House of Commons where she will formally present the petition.
