20/08/07 MP Rosie comments on raising the drinking age

Rosie said:

“Most people drink sensibly but far too many people are still drinking at levels which generate harm to themselves or others. There are some people who have the attitude that it’s OK to go out and get plastered, publicly and privately. Individuals must take responsibility for their own drinking levels. The police, government or legislation alone cannot solve this problem; it’s much more of an attitude in society.”

“People are currently getting hold of alcohol under 18 despite the current law. If the Government were to raise the age to 21 it’s not going to stop people getting hold of alcohol. Within the Government’s national alcohol strategy toughened enforcement of underage alcohol sales has been identified as a priority in tackling these problems and these must be strongly enforced. Off licenses and shops must ensure they are not selling alcohol to under-18s and adults who buy alcohol for underage drinkers should feel the full force of the law.”
