20/10/05 MP ROSIE GIVEN ASSURANCES OVER THE FUTURE OF THE MAGISTRATES COURT

In recent weeks there has been some speculation that Ormskirk Magistrates Court could be closed as part of the reforms of the Local Justice Areas, which include Chorley and Leyland Magistrates Courts.

West Lancashire MP, Rosie Cooper has received assurances that reform will not mean the closure of any of the magistrates’ courts in this area of Lancashire. There is currently a proposal from Her Majesty’s Court Service (HMCS) to amalgamate the Local Justice Areas of Chorley, Ormskirk and South Ribble.

The purpose of the proposed amalgamation of the local justice areas is expected to increase flexibility and result in more effective and efficient use of the courthouses in an effort to improve the quality of service.

Rosie Cooper MP said:

“Later this month a consultation exercise will begin and will run for a minimum of 12 weeks in which responses to this proposal will be accepted."
