“I am delighted that opposition from MPs and local residents in constituencies across the country has forced the Conservative-led Government into a u-turn. I absolutely opposed these proposals to sell off the country’s public forests and voted against them in Parliament.
“The sheer volume of correspondence I received on this issue from concerned constituents demonstrated to me the level of anger the public felt about these plans. Our forests are irreplaceable national assets which have been enjoyed by communities for generations. They should carry on being enjoyed for generations to come.
““I hope the Government has learnt its lesson. However, we must remain vigilant and guard against the Government trying to sneak this through the backdoor at some point in the future when the furore has died down. Sadly, this Government seems to know the price of everything but the value of nothing.”
