Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

23/07/07 MP Rosie comments on Rowntree Foundation Report

Comment by Rosie Cooper on Rowntree Foundation Report:

“The Prime Minister was very clear this week during Prime Ministers Question Time. I share the Prime Ministers in not accepting the findings of the Rowntree Foundation report. The number of people taken out of poverty as a result of the Government’s policies has risen substantially. Child poverty trebled under the previous Conservative Government is now coming down. While Pensioner poverty was high it is now coming down. This Government has done much to reduce poverty – the minimum wage, New Deal, tax credits and the child tax fund have all played their part.

“The co-author of the report has stated that poverty has been reduced because of the actions of this Government. He said even amongst ‘the poorest of the poor…that group had actually reduced in size in the last ten years.’ We must ensure we continue of our record of reducing the number of people living in poverty.”
