Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

24/01/11 - Thousands benefit from new Dental Services

Since opening its doors one year ago St Raphael’s Dental Practice in Up Holland has significantly improved access to dental care for thousands of local people.

Run by husband and wife team Dr Raphy Paul and Dr Puthri Raphy, the practice now has 3,658 registered patients. More than 60 of these had not seen a dentist in more than 20 years.

Dr Raphy Paul said: “We are very proud to say we have managed to change lots of patients who were nervous or had dental phobias into happy regular patients who attend the practice without any fear or phobia.

“We can confidently say the oral health advice we have given has changed the lives of many for good. We have raised awareness on the harmful effects of acidic drinks on teeth which has improved the oral health in teenagers and young patients.

“We are extremely thankful to all our patients for the overwhelming support and encouragement we have received from day one and we will continue to provide a high quality service in the future.”

The practice opened on 20 November 2009. Since then the number of people waiting for an appointment has fallen from 1,415 to seven.

Rosie Cooper, West Lancashire MP, said: “Raphy and Puthri have done a fantastic job and I am delighted with what they have achieved in just one year.  It is clear they are making a real difference and are offering an excellent service to local people.  I am sure that this will continue in the years ahead.

“We have come a long way on dental services in short space of time.  I have always believed and campaigned for NHS dental services to be available to anyone wishing to use them.  I would still encourage anyone who felt they needed to go private or has not a dentist to sign up for these services.”

Donna Roberts, NHS Central Lancashire head of contracts, community and primary care, said: “Since opening several new practices we are seeing the number of people waiting for an NHS dentist reduce greatly, which is good news for patients. New dental places are available immediately at a number of practices for anyone who lives in central Lancashire. To make an appointment please call the NHS Central Lancashire dental access service on 01772 777397.”

To register for an appointment with St Raphael’s Dental Practice patients need to call the surgery on 01695 627617.
