West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper is calling for answers from Wigan Athletic Football Club over the future of its training academy plans in Wrightington.
Rosie has written to the Chief Executive of Wigan Athletic to seek clarification of the club’s intentions after Wigan were relegated from the Premier League.
Rosie has been working with local residents’ group W-RAGE (Wrightington Residents Against Greenbelt Erosion) in opposition to the proposals and has launched a Parliamentary Petition, helping residents to get their voices heard.
MP Rosie said:
“I’ve been working with local residents in recent months who have expressed concerns about Wigan Athletic’s plans to build their training academy facility in greenbelt land that will have no benefit to the residents that will have to live with it. It is the wrong development, in the wrong location, for the wrong reasons.
“In recent weeks it has all gone quiet. There is no question Wigan’s relegation will have a major financial impact on the club and on these plans.
“I have written to the club as leaving the residents in limbo, not knowing what their plans are, is unfair.
“I would urge the club to give some indication of their plans as a matter of priority.”
