LOCAL MP Rosie Cooper has called on West Lancashire District Council to do more to bring affordable housing to the area in the long-term.
Rosie raised the issue with Housing Minister Margaret Beckett MP at Department of Communities and Local Government Questions in the House of Commons last Tuesday.
Rosie explained: “I am really concerned that there is a real need for affordable housing in West Lancashire and yet the district council has let schemes slip through its fingers.
“To make the point, I told the Housing Minister of one case in the Northern Parishes in which a housing association, working with the council's housing department, brought forward a scheme only to find that the planning department preferred it on an adjacent site for which there was no grant.
“The whole scheme therefore fell apart, with approximately £800,000 lost and no affordable housing built.
“I completely agree with the Housing Minister when she said that West Lancashire District Council needs to “for goodness sake, show some sense” and I shall continue to press the issue both with ministers and the district council.
“There needs to be some long term solutions from the district council because the lack of affordable housing in West Lancashire is having a real impact on young people's ability to get onto the property ladder.”
