Working hard for the people of West Lancashire

29/04/10 Northern Ireland Secretary joins Rosie Cooper in visit

Shaun WoodwardLabour’s candidate for West Lancashire, Rosie Cooper today welcomed Northern Ireland Secretary, Shaun Woodward to Moorside Primary School in Skelmersdale.  They were joined by Labour’s Moorside candidate, Julie Gibson.

They attended the ‘We Can Make A Difference’ assembly in which Rosie and Shaun took questions from the children. The topics ranged from what it was like to be an MP to questions about what it was like for Rosie to grow up with two deaf parents. After the event, Rosie and Shaun spoke to children, teachers and parents over tea and coffee.

West Lancashire Labour candidate, Rosie Cooper said: “I had a fabulous time at Moorside Primary School. I was impressed with the children’s knowledge of sign language and think it is great that they are learning how to communicate with deaf people.  They asked some really great questions about what it was like growing up in a deaf household and how I learned to sign. The children told us what they would like to see in Skelmersdale, especially a cinema.  They also told us what they wanted to be when they grew up. I was impressed by the variety of answers that ranged from doctors, teachers, footballers and even one said she wanted to be a princess!

“I was delighted to have Shaun at the school to speak to children and parents about the investment that Labour has put into education, schooling and families.”

Northern Ireland Secretary, Shaun Woodward said: “It was a pleasure to visit West Lancashire and join Rosie at Moorside Primary School’s  ‘We Can Make A Difference’ assembly. I was really impressed with the children’s sign-a-long to ‘I Can Sing A Rainbow’. The children were inquisitive, asking great questions about what it is like to be an MP. They also told us their hopes for the future.”
