WEST Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has said the fight to get free swimming for local under 16s isn’t yet dead in the water.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport have agreed that West Lancashire District Council could still opt into the scheme ‘in principle’, which means they would have longer than the October 31 deadline to find external funding.
Rosie explained: “All is not lost in the battle to get free swimming for under-16s in West Lancashire.
“I am told by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport that if the district council confirmed to join the scheme ‘in principle’ then the Government would accept this.
“Therefore, the council would be getting more time to sort out the funding arrangements. However, if the council cannot find the money, they would be able to withdraw without being penalised.
“I strongly urge the council to take this opportunity because it is important that under-16s as well as the over-60s benefit from the scheme, which could help to improve the health and well-being of thousands of local residents.”
