Rosie Cooper MP calls for Jobcentre support for Universal Credit claimants over Christmas

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has called for the availability of Jobcentre Plus support for Universal Credit claimants over the Christmas period.

Backing the Early Day Motion (EDM) 636 titled, “Availability of Jobcentre Plus services for Universal Credit claimants” tabled by Frank Field MP, MP Rosie calls on the Government to take steps to ensure people are able to seek immediate assistance from Jobcentre Plus at any time over the Christmas and New Year period, if the need arises.

Universal Credit is being rolled out in West Lancashire this month and Rosie is eager to ensure that all claimants are receiving adequate support, advice and guidance during what could be a very stressful and emotional time.

Rosie Cooper MP said:
“Regrettably, the Conservatives are ploughing ahead with their Universal Credit rollout plans despite repeated warnings of the damage it can cause to people, families and communities.

“As the full rollout hits, I’m calling on the Government to provide access to the necessary support, advice and guidance that is so badly needed, particularly as we enter the Christmas period and thousands of people are affected by the changes.

“Limited availability of Jobcentre Plus services over Christmas and New Year puts the welfare of claimants at risk and could diminish their ability to afford food, heating and lighting.”

Rosie has already written to the Minister asking for a halt to the rollout, met with the local Jobcentre Manager Amanda Jakeman and continues to campaign against the full rollout.

Universal Credit replaces and merges existing benefits including; Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance; Income-related Employment & Support AllowanceIncome SupportWorking Tax CreditChild Tax Credit and Housing Benefit.

Early day motion 636
AVAILABILITY OF JOBCENTRE PLUS SERVICES FOR UNIVERSAL CREDIT CLAIMANTS
Session: 2017-19
Date tabled: 04.12.2017
Primary sponsor: Field, Frank

That this House notes the limited availability of Jobcentre Plus offices and telephone lines over the Christmas and New Year period; notes also the increased likelihood of people who have recently made a new claim for universal credit needing to seek help from Jobcentre Plus within that period; believes that the limited availability of Jobcentre Plus services within that period puts the welfare of those people at risk and could diminish their ability to afford food, heating and lighting; and calls on the Government to take steps to ensure people are able to seek immediate assistance from Jobcentre Plus at any time within that period, if the need arises.
