Rosie Cooper MP comments on air strikes against ISIL

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:

“Due to the short notice of Parliament’s recall I was unable to attend the vote.  It was clear that the motion, supported from all three main political parties, to approve air strikes against ISIL would secure an overwhelming majority.

“Correspondence from West Lancashire constituents argued both for and against airstrikes.  I completely respect their views.

“These decisions are not taken easily or lightly but as I do not believe we can ignore the threat posed by the barbaric and murderous ISIL organisation, which has also killed British hostages, I would have voted for airstrikes.

“There was also a legal basis to the action following a request for support from the Iraqi Government for British forces to join the coalition already involved in airstrikes, including the USA and a number of Arab countries.

“Beyond the military coalition there has to be political and diplomatic coalitions as well against ISIL.”
