Rosie Cooper MP seeks promise of an early Christmas present for Skelmersdale during Prime Minister’s Questions

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper called on the Prime Minister to give the people of Skelmersdale an early Christmas present by promising the town funding for a much needed railway station.

MP Rosie continued her campaign by raising the Skelmersdale railway station during Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday 3 December. In response, the Prime Minister said he was happy to look at the scheme.

Following Prime Ministers Questions MP Rosie said:
“This week the Prime Minister appears to be in a spending mood trying to make good the damage caused by cuts to the NHS and flood defence spending.

“Whilst a lot of the spending announcements are focused on the South, I wanted to remind the Prime Minister other areas have projects that would make a real difference to entire communities that need funding too.

“I thought I’d take the opportunity to ask for the money to make Skelmersdale railway station happen.

“If Shrewsbury can benefit from new services then why not Skelmersdale?

“A railway station in Skelmersdale would open up a world of opportunities and possibilities for the people and town of Skelmersdale.

“In the meantime I will continue to work with Lancashire County Council and Merseytravel to progress the plans for a railway station. If the Prime Minister fails to deliver on this occasion then I will continue fighting to make a railway station in Skelmersdale a reality.”

Rosie began her campaign for a railway station in Skelmersdale in 2012. Since then Rosie has campaigned locally and nationally to raise awareness of the scheme and develop support for the project. Previously the shadow transport secretary visited West Lancashire to discuss the scheme, Rosie has raised the project in Parliamentary debates and in questions to Transport Ministers.

Through Rosie’s campaigning and hard work, Skelmersdale railway station is now included in Lancashire County Council’s West Lancashire Highways and Transport Masterplan and Merseytravel’s Long-term rail improvement strategy.
