West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper is once again supporting the Union of Shop, Distribution and Allied Workers (USDAW) Freedom From Fear Campaign.

USDAW has been campaigning for more legal protection for shopworkers, with over 300 assaulted every day.

They have been pushing, and continue to do so, for a specific offence relating to assault on people who come into face-to-face contact with members of the public when carrying out their job.

Recent legislation was blocked by the Government that would have meant those found guilty of assaulting a public-facing worker would have faced up to 12 months in jail and/or a £10,000 fine.

Rosie is calling on shopworkers, union members or not, to speak to USDAW members and reps and take part in their Respect Survey, a survey of violence and abuse against retail staff.

Rosie Cooper MP said:

“I am supporting the USDAW Respect for Shopworkers’ Week as no worker should ever suffer any form of abuse, violence or assault in carrying out their work duties, ever.

“With over 300 workers becoming victims every day, this must end now. The Freedom From Fear campaign is a great initiative from USDAW, whilst I will continue to work with my fellow Labour MPs to ensure we put in place the right legislation.

“I urge all employees in the industry, union members or not, to seriously engage with the campaign as it is for your protection.

“Whilst joining USDAW would give you huge support should you ever need it, even just filling out the Respect Survey will contribute to the great work USDAW do every day to protect shopworkers.”

John Hannett, USDAW General Secretary said:

“The results from last year’s survey showed far too many people still aren’t reporting incidents of assault or abuse.

“It is incredibly important that all incidents are reported so that we can make sure that employers are making every effort to deal with the problem.

“This year, as well as continuing to collect information on the reporting of incidents, we need your help to find out how the most serious incidents are dealt with, whether they are reported to the police and if so, how good was the response.”
