West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has expressed her deep disappointment following Tesco’s announcement that it is to close its Ormskirk store.
The announcement comes as its chief executive axes 43 stores nationwide. The closure will affect the 55 staff employed at the town centre Tesco Metro store.
Since the announcement Rosie has had conversations with Tesco and with the shopworkers union, Usdaw following the announcement to discuss the next stages for staff.
Tesco confirmed to Rosie that based on the store’s business case it is incredibly unlikely that store can or will be saved from closure.
In response Rosie is pushing for action to keep staff in employment. She has called for staff to be redeployed to other Tesco stores, for example Burscough and Southport. Where there are redundancies Rosie received assurances that training and support to help staff find alternative employment will be available.
Currently conversations are taking place with staff, which will continue over the next three to four weeks.
MP Rosie said:
“News of Ormskirk’s Tesco Store closure is deeply disappointing for the 55 staff and their families who are affected by the decision. It’s also bad news for retail in Ormskirk town centre.
“My priority is the staff at this difficult, uncertain and worrying time. Having experienced redundancy myself I understand the position they are in.
“I have spoken with both Tesco and Usdaw and will continue to work with them throughout this period to ensure staff get the support they need and deserve.
“I am meeting the local store manager and the union representative to discuss any concerns and issues and to offer my support to staff.
“Over the years I visited the store on numerous occasions including national food collection day and for the computers for schools initiatives, which the staff have got heavily involved in supporting for the benefit of the local community.
“In the coming weeks I will continue to push Tesco to ensure that they are working to see their employees remain in employment with access to all the advice, training and support they need.
“If any Ormskirk Tesco staff wish to speak to me or raise any concerns at any time then I would encourage them to get in touch by calling 01695 570094 or by emailing email@example.com.”
