West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper presented a petition in the Houses of Parliament asking the Government to urge the borough council to provide burial and cremation services in West Lancashire without delay.
Having recently met with the West Lancashire Pensioners Forum and working with them and other groups over many years in pushing for such provisions, Rosie presented the petition of over 2000 signatures to parliament.
Residents of West Lancashire have for years faced the problem of having to travel to neighbouring areas such as Liverpool, St Helens and Southport to lay their loved ones to rest or have them cremated.
This has incurred extra cost to West Lancashire residents over and above that which local residents would pay.
MP Rosie and the West Lancashire Pensioners Forum are continuing to campaign to find a solution.
MP Rosie said:
“For several years I’ve been campaigning for new cemetery and crematorium provision in West Lancashire.
“Too many families are having to lay their loved ones to rest in neighbouring boroughs due to our lack of burial space, for which they are charged a higher amount.
“As well as costing families a significant amount extra to bury loved ones, there is then the extra distance travelling to visit the resting place whether it is Southport, Liverpool or St Helens, which adds even more costs.
“There is no statutory duty requiring West Lancashire Borough Council to provide burial areas so the solution will mean we have to find a private provider.
“I welcome the hard work and effort of West Lancashire Pensioners Forum to raise awareness of this awful situation.
“The petition was presented to Parliament with over 2000 signatures and I will monitor the Government’s response in delivering a solution for the benefit of bereaved West Lancashire families.”

Public Petition Presentation -; Burial and Cremation Services.
Tuesday 17 March 2015
For several years I have been campaigning, alongside various community groups, including West Lancashire Pensioners Forum. Our aim is to secure new cemetery and crematorium provision in West Lancashire to rectify an awful and unacceptable situation facing many residents.
It is an issue that West Lancashire Borough Council refuses to address.
Too many families are laying their loved ones to rest in neighbouring boroughs due to not available burial plots. These families are incurring higher funeral costs and have to travel further to visit their loved ones resting; a major challenge where people are reliant on public transport.
I therefore am presenting this petition to the House of Commons on behalf of West Lancashire Pensioners Forum and for the residents of West Lancashire.
The Petition states
The petition of residents of West Lancashire
Declares that burial and cremation services should be provided in West Lancashire without delay; further that this provision will mean that burial and cremation services are less expensive and more convenient for residents and further that a local petition on the matter has been signed by 2000 individuals.
The Petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to encourage West Lancashire Borough Council to provide burial and cremation services in West Lancashire.
And the Petitioners remain etc.
