West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper welcomed the signing of a 15 year lease making Reel Cinemas the anchor leisure tenant at Skelmersdale town centre but warned against any further delays or obstructions to realising the vision for a new town centre.
MP Rosie said:
“The redevelopment of Skelmersdale town centre is a vital part of making Skelmersdale a 21st century town.
“As I have said previously it is now time for this vision to be realised, it is what the people of Skelmersdale have been promised and it is what they deserve.
“Reel Cinemas’ commitment to a long term 15 year lease is a positive step.
“Only when the diggers are on site and work begins will residents have confidence that this long promised redevelopment scheme will happen.
“At present we have two competing proposal from St Modwen and the Concourse Shopping Centre.
“All along I’ve said that the Concourse is an important part of a vibrant town centre. What we need now is for St Modwen and the Concourse owners to deliver the best outcome for the town. A scheme that puts the interests of the residents first. A scheme in which everyone wins.
“For too long the shoppers of Skelmersdale have voted with their feet and wallets going outside of the town to shop, go to the cinema or to a restaurant.
“My ambition continues to be a redevelopment of the entire town centre that gives Skelmersdale a vibrant heart that residents will use and can enjoy.”
