Responding to the news that West Lancashire Borough Council is to invest millions of pounds in kickstarting the long overdue development of Skelmersdale Town Centre, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:
“I have campaigned for a new Skelmersdale Town Centre for many, many years and it is welcome news that plans seem to be progressing.
“This is a start, an underwhelming one but a start nonetheless, but the Council and St Modwen must see this as a stepping stone and the following phases need to arrive quickly. I have always said that residents will continue to remain sceptical until they see diggers on site and work commencing.
“Skelmersdale is crying out for a diverse shopping experience, new outlets and a night time economy. We need to build, not just talk about cinemas and new dining and social facilities as part of the wider offering.
“I will continue to do all I can to support residents, traders, retailers, the Concourse, the Council and St Modwen in finally bringing this long overdue town centre to fruition and start bringing back in some of that 90% of Skelmersdale spend that currently goes outside of the town.
“The Concourse management must be on board with this and the project must give an opportunity for existing traders and businesses to voice their opinions and concerns, and be given assurance that this new town centre will complement their operations by increasing footfall, and not be a replacement for them.”
