West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper is opposing the reported franchising of Ormskirk Post Office.
The Post Office moved its base from its building on Aughton Street to the back of the WHSmith on Moor Street in February 2017, to the disappointment of many customers.
Now the Post Office intend to change from WHSmith being a host, to being a franchisee.
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper commented:
“Residents and customers are rightly worried by what seems to be an increasingly privatised and watered down Post Office service. Unions have also contacted me concerned for their staff’s futures.
“Our Post Office is owned by the taxpayers and the franchising of our branches to private operators risks losing control over the quality of service, the treatment of staff and the hours of business.
“It is clear that this government’s determination to place any and every public service in the hand of private providers is behind this, as it was with the Royal Mail privatisation and is now with our NHS.
“I have written to the Post Office and WHSmith to oppose this franchising and also to the Business Secretary to ask him to use his influence to stop this and protect our local Post Office branches.”
