West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper is delighted that NHS England and Vertex Pharmaceuticals have secured a definitive agreement to make all three of Vertex’s UK-licensed medicines available.
In a letter from NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens to the Health and Social Care Select Committee Chair, Mr Stevens states that NHS patients will now have access to Orkambi, as well as Symkevi and Kalydeco.
MP Rosie, a Member of Parliament’s Health and Social Care Select Committee, has long campaigned for the NHS, Vertex and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) to come to an agreement so that Orkambi could be provided for Cystic Fibrosis patients. She said:
“For far too long Cystic Fibrosis patients and their families have had to wait whilst NHS England, NICE and Vertex negotiated the terms of making Orkambi available to Cystic Fibrosis patients.
“This life changing drug is finally now available, and I know the many constituents who have campaigned with me on this issue will be relieved that Orkambi is now available.
“The Health Select Committee has pushed NHS England and Health Secretaries on this issue for some time and I am pleased that agreement is now in place.”
