West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has secured the cleanup of one of Skelmersdale’s ‘World Class for Business’ signs, on the M58 slip road at Pimbo.
Following a constituent’s complaint, MP Rosie contacted West Lancashire Borough Council to raise her concerns that the sign was obscured with the area badly overgrown and that this set a poor impression for the town.
WLBC responded to say they had contacted Highways England to secure the necessary permissions for lane closure to access and clear the overgrowth, but were waiting some time for a response from them.
Rosie Cooper MP wrote to Highways England to ensure that permission was granted to WLBC to allow them undertake the works. She said:
“Constituents raised their concerns with me over the state of the sign and the overgrowth and how a sign that states ‘World Class for Business’ being obscured by shrubs does not send out the right message that the area is open to welcome new business to the town.
“Having corresponded with the council, I followed up with Highways England to ensure that the necessary lane closure on the slip road would be granted so that West Lancashire Borough Council’s workers could undertake the work safely.
“I’m pleased that Highways England provided a swift response and granted permission for the lane closure, and confirmed that the council have permission to undertake the works annually, provided they give seven days’ notice.
“West Lancashire Borough Council have now completed the cleanup and so I expect the area to be better maintained in the future.”
