West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has hit out at the Government’s complete lack of a plan to support shielded vulnerable residents.
During this morning’s session of Parliament’s Health and Social Care Select Committee, Minister of State for Care Helen Whately, representing the Government, admitted that she had no different advice to give other than that which is already generally available.
MP Rosie pressed to Minister to give some advice or guidance to the thousands of vulnerable people who should be shielding but without a financial support package from Government will be forced to continue going to work and risking their lives.
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper hit out at the Minister and Government saying:
“Having had the opportunity to question the Health Minister directly it was clear for me and all those who watched that the Minister, the Department and this Government have no plan to support shielded residents. She had no answer to whether local Directors of Public Health, CCGs or GPs were involved in the planning for a shielding scheme.
“I gave the Minister umpteen chances to give some direction and support to those who are now required to shield about how they will be supported.
“The Minister told the Committee there is no other advice than what is ‘generally available’ – which many have already pointed out is not much at all!
“Minister Whately seems more interested in what shielding plans might look like in the future but completely failed to acknowledge that the Tier 3 lockdown restrictions are here now and will be implemented by tomorrow!
“This Government currently is suggesting even in Tier 3 areas that people who should be shielding, who can’t work from home, should go to work risking their lives!
“The Government needs to announce and deliver an urgent package of financial support to all those vulnerable and shielded workers who shouldn’t for their health’s sake go to work.
“Tier 3 is set to come into effect in Liverpool from tomorrow, but that could spread across the country in the coming days including my West Lancashire constituency which is Tier 2.
“I need assurances that Government is helping to save all lives by also supporting the restrictions with the right financial support.”
