West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has condemned the practice of “fire and re-hire” being employed by British Gas against their hard-working employees.
Rosie has been advised that Centrica may be intending to serve some employees with Section 188 notices, forcing them to either accept a contract on reduced terms or have their contracts terminated without redundancy.
Rosie Cooper MP said:
“It is alarming to hear that bosses of large firms like British Gas would take such draconian measures against their own staff in the middle of the current crisis. I have been contacted by constituents who are desperately concerned at the extortionate choice being forced upon them.
“I wrote to Chris O’Shea, the Chief Executive of Centrica, in early December about this, but he has not yet seen fit to respond to me or to the concerns I have raised on behalf of my constituents. Is it any wonder that members of the GMB union have balloted to strike by an overwhelming majority?
“Centrica should get around the table and listen to the concerns of its valued staff, not throw them into uncertainty in the middle of a pandemic.”
