Rosie Cooper MP has strongly condemned the decision by P&O Ferries to serve 800 of their staff with redundancy notices.
Seafarers at P&O received their notice without warning via a Zoom conference late last week – and now there are reports at P&O Ferries intends to replace them with agency staff who may be paid as little as £1.80 per hour!
Rosie Cooper MP commented,
“This is a vicious and premeditated attack on British workers by a company which received millions in taxpayer money during the pandemic. It should be resisted with full force by people up and down this country and by these workers’ unions: the RMT and Nautilus.
“I have joined with more than 40 other Labour parliamentarians in signing an open letter to the Transport Secretary demanding that he intervene to hold P&O accountable – including revoking their licences and withdrawing government contracts.
“The government must now recognise that its refusal to outlaw “fire and rehire” has laid the groundwork for this despicable decision. Earlier this week, Labour tabled a motion calling on the government to ban fire and re-hire. The government didn’t even show up to the debate!
“I will be following events closely and applying maximum pressure on the government to intervene in what is becoming a Wild West of employment rights! Any West Lancashire resident who stands to be affected by this decision should contact my office and I will provide whatever support I can.”
